Article: Timanfaya National Park – Experiencing Volcanoes Up Close

The Story of an Eruption

Between 1730 and 1736, volcanic eruptions shook the southwest of the island. Villages were buried under lava. Today, the eerie and magical landscape still tells that story.

Visiting the Park

  • Montañas del Fuego: main area with visitor center & El Diablo Restaurant (cooked over geothermal heat!)
  • Bus tours only allowed inside the protected zone
  • Walking trails outside the park, like Ruta del Litoral
  • Geothermal demos with steam and fire at the entrance

Fire as Artistic Inspiration

César Manrique’s work was heavily inspired by Timanfaya. Many local artists – including the Yumi team – draw on its earthy textures, colors, and geometry. Lava stone, cracks, red tones – all become part of the artistic vocabulary.

Practical Tips

  • Opening hours: 9:00–17:00 daily
  • Entry: €22 for adults, reduced for children
  • Arrive early (limited parking)
  • Tickets online: https://entradas.cactlanzarote.com

Conclusion

Timanfaya is not just a place you visit – it’s a place you feel. Anyone wishing to understand Lanzarote should start here.
